What Actually Changes When You Go Tubeless

Removing the inner tube eliminates pinch-flat risk, which is what lets riders run lower pressure with confidence — but it doesn’t automatically shift the single “optimal” pressure for a given weight and tire width by a fixed amount. This calculator’s engine treats rim/tube type as a structural input alongside casing, weight, and terrain — on a standard hooked rim, the difference between the tubed and tubeless output is often just 1–2 PSI, because the bead-retention physics barely changes. The real-world “tubeless runs 5–10 PSI lower” guidance you’ll see elsewhere is mostly describing the wider safe range tubeless unlocks — riders who used to inflate several PSI above their real target just to avoid pinch flats can now run closer to the true optimum.

Where Hookless Rims Change the Story

Hookless (straight-side / TSS) rims are a different case entirely. They carry their own lower pressure factor independent of tube setup, on top of the hard 72.5 PSI ETRTO ceiling. That combination is why the tubed-vs-tubeless gap on hookless rims in the reference table above (3–6 PSI) is meaningfully larger than the same comparison on hooked rims (0–1 PSI) — most of that gap comes from the rim design itself, not from removing the tube.

Discipline Changes the Baseline Independently

Gravel and XC MTB run roughly 10% lower than an equivalent road setup at the same weight and width; Trail and Enduro MTB run about 5% higher again than XC, reflecting the extra casing support those disciplines need. Always pick the discipline that matches your actual terrain, not just your bike’s category.

The Hookless Ceiling Is Absolute

Regardless of what your calculated pressure would otherwise be, 72.5 PSI is the hard ETRTO maximum for any tire on a hookless rim bead. This calculator clamps its output there automatically on hookless selections and shows an alert when clamping occurs — never exceed this limit based on what a tire’s own sidewall claims it can hold.
